Grotski and the Magic Wheat

The farmers in Blotski are tired of working so hard to grow and harvest the crops they have grown for ever. One day a slick salesman arrives to urge them to grow Magic Wheat. He says:

You throw it, it grows, you just rest, and meanwhile,

“It ripens, falls off and rolls up in a pile.

You throw it, you pick up those piles and that’s it.

Farmers, imagine, you farm while you sit!”

All the farmers are convinced to buy this new seed, except old man Grotski. What follows are the unexpected consequences of a get-quick-rich scheme, including the loss of the sustainable agriculture they had learned from their ancestors.

The First Annual Go-Cart Race for Dogs

The race is about to start!

Dogs of all breeds—on all manner of vehicles—are lined up at Barton Heights in Joseph. Bets are being made on the winner. Who will win? The cattle dog on a lawnmower? The Bloodhound on a giant tire?

The race begins!

But wait! Was that a squirrel?

Alaska Nicknames

During many years in Alaska Kathy collected the clever names given to residents of small towns here, like that of the Oregon Mare, a dancehall girl who neighed like a horse while dancing, or Mudhole Smith, who crashed his plane in mud. Said radio personality Tom Bodett,”..a rib-tickling and ambitious collection of characters..true frontier folklore.”

Illustrations for this book were done by cartoonist Clint Sayer
